...the Bible tells me so:

True Security

Rocky Whitely, preacher

Mom and Dad loved politics. As a child, I thought that political conventions were boring and that political ads would never end.

Somehow that has all changed. One day I discovered that I could reduce my tax bill by electing the right people.

On Tuesday evening, I was very interested in President George W. Bush’s “State of the Union” address. He said the things that needed to be said, as he spoke on 1) International Security, protecting the world from terrorism, 2) Homeland Security, protecting our borders from terrorism, and 3) Economic Security, reversing the current recession afflicting our nation.

I love our country. I support our president. However, I know where true security lies. True security is found in God.

When Jacob, the grandson of Abraham, felt the insecurity of fleeing his brother Esau, he saw in a dream a ladder reaching into heaven. Angels were ascending and descending on it. Then God stood above it and repeated the promise that He made to Abraham and Isaac. God concluded with these words, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you” (Genesis 28:15 NIV). Jacob prospered in the Promised Land.

When Joseph, the son of Jacob, felt the insecurity of being sold into slavery into Egypt by his brothers, “God was with him” (Acts 7:9). God was with him as a slave in his master Potiphar’s house and as a prisoner in Pharaoh’s prison (Genesis 39). God eventually raised Joseph to be second-in-command in Egypt under Pharaoh.

When Joshua felt the insecurity of leading Israel in the conquest of the Promised Land, God told him,

“Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:6-9; see verse 5; Deuteronomy 31:6)

God was with King David (1 Samuel 18:12, 14, 28) and King Solomon (1 Kings 8:57). The eyes of the Lord watched over the Jewish leaders (Ezra 5:5). God’s hand protected Ezra the priest (7:6) and Nehemiah (Nehemiah 2:8, 18).

God was with the apostle Paul as he was preaching in Corinth (Acts 18:10). He was even with Stephen, the first Christian martyr, in his death (Acts 7:55-60).

What struggles do you have? What difficulties? What troubles? What problems?

What promises has God made you? What oaths? What assurances? What guarantees?

I thank God for my precious Jesus. He said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

Jesus is with me always. May He be with you, too.
